2009 Nike Cup Amateur Team

The ASGA amateurs defeated the Arkansas PGA Chapter professionals 20.5 (20 & 1/2) to 11.5 (11 & 1/2) to win the 35th annual Nike Cup Matches this weekend at Hot Springs Country Club.

The four-ball was a push, 4-4, but the ams won the alternate shot 6.5 to 1.5 and led 10.5 to 5.5 heading into the singles matches.  The amateurs won the singles 10 to 6 on Sunday.

Neal Westbrook of Russellville and Brian Allbright of Hot Springs Village led the amateurs by winning all three matches - the only amateurs to do so.

Trey Schaap of Little Rock was the hottest golfer on the course Sunday with four birdies in the first six holes on his way to defeating 5-time PGA Player of the Year Tim Zimmerebner of Hot Springs.

The ams have now won the past five matches, 12 of the last 13 and lead the overall series 25-10.

The ASGA and PGA are proud to announce the Nike Cup name will be changed to the Randy Beaver Cup, beginning in 2010.  Randy Beaver was the general manager/PGA Professional at Rolling Hills in Cabot and was a long-time participant in the Nike Cup.  Pancreatic cancer took his life in May.
