The Women’s Committee would like to fill you in a little bit on what has been happening during this ASGA/AWGA merger transition year.
With this merger of ASGA and AWGA we have added more women on our ASGA Board. We now have Pam Evans (Rookie) ,Beth Foster, Kerry Lareau, Julie Oxendine, Linda Carter and Cippy Smith serving on the ASGA Board of Directors.
We have also added more women to our Women’s Committee. The 12 women now serving on our Women’s Committee are Pam Evans (Rookie), Kerry Lareau, Julie Oxendine, Linda Carter, Kathe Parson, Candace Barker, Jo Crews, Peggy Woosley, Rhonda Haynes, Beth Foster, Brenda Alexander and Cippy Smith. Brenda and Cippy are serving as Women’s Committee co-chairs.
A merger sounds so simple: Merger details finalized---sign on the dotted line---done deal.
But a merger involves more than what meets the eye. So many details to attend to and decisions to make. This year is a work in progress. And what makes it even more difficult ----it is a work in progress while we are actually putting on tournaments at the same time.
So the bad news: Unfortunately this year is a little bit of a trial and error due to our late start, due to the merger not being finalized until April 12 after our golf season had already begun.
But the good news is: This year gives us the opportunity to work through everything and get it right for next year.
So we are asking for your patience this year---we are working very hard to meet the challenges and to get everything right.
Please know that the Women’s Committee appreciates your patience and next year you will see and reap the rewards of our work and progress this year.
The Standing Rules of ASGA and AWGA govern everything. The merger agreement states that the ASGA and AWGA Standing Rules will be merged into one set of Standing Rules to govern the merged association. And they are not always the same. Some standing rules, practices and procedures are the same---no problem there. Some standing rules are basically the same but with some small differences---just some tweaking necessary there. But some standing rules are completely different and in some cases maybe even polar opposites.---those take a lot of time and effort and decisions to reconcile. And there lies the problem of trying to run tournaments at the same time decisions are having to be made that can totally change what each association had been used to doing and understands.
What the Women’s Committee has been charged with: Take the best of ASGA standing rules and the best of AWGA standing rules and put them together for what is best for everybody. It is no small feat !
Some examples of what we have been looking at that have required decisions and changes:
Number of Divisions-----ages for the divisions----yardages and which tees divisions will play-----what tournaments to offer----tournament sites and dates-----tournament entry fees-----flighting procedures-----qualifying procedures-----brackets in Match-----tie breaker procedures-----net and gross decisions-----how designateds are run-----balancing week day and week end tournament dates-----Player of the Year Point distribution changes-----what trophies to use and which to retire-----engraving changes on the trophies we use-----tournament prizes and special events-----working with the other states on the Fore State Cup Matches-----use of handicaps in tournaments. And I am sure I am forgetting some of the material we are having to go thru, but you get the idea.
I would like to say that we realize that we have been remiss with communications this year with our members and potential members. We apologize for this. Please bear with us and know that we realize that this has been a huge problem and we are addressing it.
And last but not least---please never hesitate to contact any member of the Women’s Committee with thoughts, suggestions or complaints. We are trying to do what is best for everybody and what pleases the majority, so input from you is necessary and welcome. And don’t forget, you can also contact us to tell us how much you like what we are doing. Encouragement and praise are always welcome.
Thank you for your support and would love to see you at the tournaments still to be played this year-----Parent/Child at The Greens at North Hills on July 30-----ASGA/AWGA NWA Championship Designated Tournament at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Alma on Aug. 4-5, Arkansas Women’s Match Play Championship at Glenwood CC. on Aug 14-17----ASGA/AWGA 4-Ball Tournament at The Ridges at Village Creek on Sept. 3-4----and ASGA/AWGA Pink Ball Tournament at Red Apple Inn on Oct. 22.
So please mark your calendars and come join us. Thank you.
