Junior Four-Ball Championship 2019

04/01/2019

TEXARKANA, Ark (April 1st, 2019) –This past weekend, smiles and high-fives were endless as 68 junior golfers kicked off the tournament season at the Junior Four-Ball Championship. Two years in the making, this was the first year for the event to be held and was hosted by Texarkana Country Club at their premier 18 hole golf course. Participants enjoyed lunch and refreshments in addition to 18 holes of golf each day.

Finishing the second round, three teams in the junior boy’s flight tied for first place: Ben Brogdon and Will Griffin, Josh McNulty and Hunter Walker, and lastly, Palmer McSpadden and William Whitelaw. “Our second round on the back nine was a challenge,” said Whitelaw. “We just missed a lot of putts, especially on eighteen when we both bogied and we thought it was over.”

Those teams went on to a championship tiebreaker on three holes with life-long friends Palmer McSpadden and William Whitelaw finishing with the team victory and keeping the game fun when presented the challenge. “We’re on the same high school team and we just know how to make each other laugh,” says McSpadden. “The bad shots become kinda funny.”

The junior girl’s second round flight concluded with Graci Henard and Josie Roberson for the win, exceeding their expectations for the tournament. “This is one of the first tournaments of the year, so I thought I would just see how my golf game is going to go,” says Henard. “But we also have a partner to see what good score we could put together, so I think we did pretty good!”

We had a chance to talk with the winning teams afterward and find out what their plans were for the rest of the year. For Henard and Roberson, they prepare for district and state tournaments, as well as college in their future. Similarly, McSpadden and Whitelaw will also be focused on high school golf, as well as match-play and a few more ASGA tournaments.

The ASGA extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who came out and embraced the chilling temperatures to support our junior golfers this weekend. Other thanks to Texarkana Country Club and hardworking staff for hosting our first junior tournament of the year.
