The Garland Tynes Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of Mr. Tynes and his passion for golf course management. Two students at the University of Arkansas will receive the scholarship as they pursue careers in the golf superintendent industry.

The 2024 Garland Tynes Memorial Scholarship is being awarded to two University of Arkansas students. Hayden Hawthorne and Michael Battaglia will receive $5000 to support their work and study in turfgrass sciences.

This scholarship has been organized and funded by the Arkansas State Golf Association and Kathy Tynes to honor her late husband, Garland, who was the golf course superintendent at Pine Bluff Country Club for 45 years and tragically passed in a car accident in 2021. Garland (and the entire Tynes family) was a legend and pioneer in the Arkansas golf course superintendent industry and he mentored and impacted countless young people in this business.

Hayden Hawthorne is a current junior at the University of Arkansas and is pursuing a B.S. in Horticulture, Landscape, and Turf Management with a minor in Agriculture Business. He has held numerous internships, most notably at the PGA of America in Frisco, Texas, and at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club as a greenskeeper intern.

Michael Battaglia is a current graduate research assistant at the University of Arkansas and is working toward his Master of Science in plant pathology and phytopathology. He has experience in turf management through internships at Oakland Hills Country Club and the city of Eden Prairie.

These students are awarded the Garland Tynes Memorial Scholarship not only for their accomplishments to date but also for their potential to grow and impact golf course management in the future.
