The Governor’s Cup is an annual Ryder-Cup style, match play team event between the Arkansas State Golf Association (ASGA) and the Mississippi Golf Association (MGA)

History

The Governor’s Cup is an annual Ryder-Cup style, match play team event between the Arkansas State Golf Association (ASGA) and the Mississippi Golf Association (MGA). This competition was founded in 2005 after the former Mid-South Cup Matches, originally a competition among six southern states - Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas, stopped.

The ASGA and MGA were the only two states that wanted to continue an annual competition. The Mid-South Cup Matches began in 1977 at Texarkana Country Club.

Format

The Governor’s Cup is an annual Ryder-Cup style, match play team event with four-ball, foursomes, and singles matches.

Team Selection

Each May, the ASGA announces its 10 top amateurs (excluding college players) from its points list the year before, including the Mid-Amateur Player of the Year; plus eight seniors and two super-seniors - 20 players total versus a similar team from the MGA. Sometimes it has been eight amateurs and two mid-amateurs plus the four seniors and two super seniors.

The ASGA hosts in even-numbered years and the MGA hosts in odd-numbered years. Each team provides uniform (two shirts, a hat and a vest or pullover so each team can be dressed alike. It is up to the individual player to pay his own travel and lodging expense.
