Randy Beaver Cup is a competition held every year since 1975 between amateurs representing the ASGA and PGA Professionals representing the Arkansas PGA Chapter.
History
Originally known as the ASGA-PGA Cup Matches, the name changed to Nike Cup when Nike became the official clothing supplier of the Cup Matches.
The event is now known as the Randy Beaver Cup in honor of long-time PGA Professional and Arkansas Golf Hall of Famer Randy Beaver, who passed away from pancreatic cancer (the name change was actually suggested by Nike Golf Rep Kim Backus).
Format
The Randy Beaver Cup is a Ryder Cup style team event, with fourball, foursomes, and singles matches
Team Selection
Team selections for the 2022 team were based on the following from the 2022 Player of the Year Point Standings:
- Top 7 amateurs*
- Mid-Am Player of the Year
- Top 6 seniors
- Top 2 super-seniors
*Typically college players are not given clearance to play as it counts as the number of competition days in the calendar year. Sometimes, a player who is red-shirting is given clearance to play by their respective college coach.
It is anticipated the exact same selections will be used for the 2023 Randy Beaver Cup, scheduled October 21-22.
Other information
Fairway & Greene, the official clothing supplier for the ASGA, provides uniforms for both teams - typically two shirts and a pullover or vest. The ASGA pays the course usage fees (carts, range balls and team meals at Hot Springs Country Club, which is the permanent site for the Randy Beaver Cup.
Each team usually has a non-playing captain, which sometimes becomes a player such as the case a couple of years ago when an ASGA amateur got a kidney stone at the last minute.
The matches are usually held in late October after the season concludes and includes breakfast both days, four-ball and foursome matches on Saturday with a box lunch, a pairings party with heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages on Saturday night and singles matches on Sunday. With 16 players on each team, each match is worth 1 point and ties are split.
